We are pleased to announce that Edel Mitchell from GOSHH will be conducting workshops at our school for First and Second-year students on Monday, January 29th, and Tuesday, January 30th. GOSHH, a charitable organization, is dedicated to promoting equality and well-being for everyone, with a positive and respectful approach to sexual orientation and gender diversity.
The objectives of the workshops are as follows:
Show solidarity with young individuals identifying as part of the LGBTQ community, ensuring their visibility, audibility, and overall sense of safety.
Emphasize a zero-tolerance policy towards Biphobic, Homophobic, and Transphobic language and bullying, creating a secure environment for all participants.
Disseminate accurate information regarding gender and sexual orientation, fostering awareness of appropriate terminology.
In light of recent research by the youth LGBTQ support group BeLong To, revealing the persistent presence of homophobic, transphobic, and biphobic language, as well as harassment, abuse, and exclusion of LGBTQ students in second-level schools, we recognize the importance of addressing these issues. The survey, encompassing responses from 1,208 LGBTQ students aged 13-20 across all 26 counties, indicated concerning findings: 76% of students feel unsafe at school; 69% reported hearing homophobic remarks from peers, and 58% reported such remarks from school staff.
We want to assure parents that Edel’s presentation will be age-appropriate, delivered with compassion and sensitivity.
If, for any reason, you do not want your son/daughter to attend the talk, please notify us as soon as possible by emailing Ann at annmulcahy@salesiancollege.ie
As this presents a unique opportunity to enhance the well-being of our students through education and support, we kindly request a contribution of €3.25 from parents/guardians to cover the costs. A payment option will be available on the app on Monday, January 22nd, and will close on Wednesday, January 24th. You can ‘Opt Out’ if you do not wish for your son/daughter to attend.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
