Dear Parent/Guardian,
We have been asked to share the following regarding a few webinars coming up next week that may be of interest
————————————————————————
There is one on next Monday the 10th, at 19:00, called “Supporting your teen when they’re feeling socially excluded”, this one is with Dr Malie Coyne.
There is another next Thursday evening, at 19:00, called “The importance of sleep for our teenagers”, with Lucy Wolfe.
Both these should be of interest to a lot of parents. 38% of 15-16 year-olds report having been rejected by their friends at some point, and 55% of them are not getting enough sleep. There is a lot that parents can do to help support their teens in these areas.
The third one is a bit more marginal and called “Target; Test; Hook; Trap: How can we prevent this the exploitation of young people into drug crime” This one is on Tuesday the 11th at 13:00 with the CEO of Escapeline, a UK organisation working on the prevention of criminal and sexual exploitation of young people. There may only be a very few parents regionally that have concerns in this line, but it ought to be interesting regardless.

Social Exclusion
38% of our teenagers reported the experience of being rejected by their friends1. This is at 45% for girls and 28% for boys, and the teenagers that reported this experience show significantly different correlations across all mental wellbeing indicators. They also show higher rates of absenteeism from school, and increased rates for substance use behaviours.
1 This was an important finding from the November 2024 Planet Youth survey. 5,079 15- and 16-year-old teenagers participated in this survey, from all 90 schools and centres in the West of Ireland. The latest Planet Youth reports are available on the website here.
Bí Cineálta are the new national procedures to prevent and address bullying behaviour for primary and post-primary schools, and are most welcome. Social exclusion is a problem that extends far beyond the ability of schools to address fully however, and is part of the reason the Social Exclusion webinar has been organised.
